None of the main flower parts are colored at all; instead, techniques and ingenuity are used to bring out the color and vibrancy entirely through the washi paper itself, while preserving its natural hue. The flowers and all their parts—including the stems—are original designs drawn from scratch, and a matte varnish is applied to protect the original colors and the washi paper.
By varying the thickness of the washi and the cardboard core, a sense of three-dimensionality is created within the artwork itself.
On the wooden frame behind the flower, silver and ultra-thin black washi are layered together; this monochromatic base serves to enhance the flower’s sense of color.
Furthermore, the use of this silver washi paper creates a slight reflection of light when viewed from different angles, evoking a traditional Japanese aesthetic while also imparting a metallic sheen that harmonizes with the frame.
This is a truly one-of-a-kind washi flower piece.
I named the work “Saika,” incorporating the meanings of “color” and “flower” from the Japanese word “irodori.”
