Business Name: Driftwood Art Yu Representative: Yunao Okazaki After working at an interior design trading company and gaining experience in selling interior products, I began creating a series of driftwood-based artworks as a hobby in March 2017. Driftwood is material whose origin and the length of time it has spent drifting are completely unknown. I cleaned the dirt off these pieces of wood and shaped them into artworks. Because of the rounded shapes formed by rough waves and the high disinfecting effect of salt, I am particularly partial to pieces collected from the Pacific Ocean. Recently, I’ve also been using quite a bit of driftwood collected from the clear, high-altitude streams of the Japanese Alps. I always boil the collected driftwood to sterilize it and dry it in the sun before beginning the crafting process. I strive to preserve the “natural texture” and maximize the “beauty of the wood grain,” while above all else, ensuring the surface is “smooth enough to prevent splinters!” The finishing touch is a light coat of “vegetable oil.” Since this is a natural material, there may be slight “scratches” or “cracks”; please understand in advance that these are part of the unique charm of driftwood.
