The Kanto Festival is a representative festival of Akita City, Akita Prefecture. It is an event where the Kanto lanterns are likened to ears of rice and rice bales to pray for a bountiful harvest. While it has become a rather formal festival today, it was a much more free-spirited celebration dating back to the Edo period.
I create many papier-mâché works featuring "bakemoni," or shape-shifting tanuki that mimic human behavior. Inspired by depictions of the free-spirited and joyful Kanto Festival of the Edo period, this piece depicts tanuki having fun by imitating what they see, rendered in papier-mâché.
