Ogata Kenzan: The Potter Who Elevated Pottery to an Art Form
This is the work I am submitting to this year’s Design Competition. I drew inspiration from the life and works of Ogata Kenzan, an Edo-period potter whose art has always captivated me, and created this character based on that inspiration. What makes him so compelling is that, while he was both unpretentious and intellectual, he looked up to his older brother, Ogata Korin, and his mentor, Nonomura Ninsei, and went on to pioneer his own unique style of expression in the field of ceramics. I will continue my work with the hope that Japan’s art—along with the life stories of the people who created it—will be cherished by many and preserved and passed down to future generations.
