My name is Rui Mercia (Mercia Rui). Since November 2022, I have been creating art that reflects what I wish to express—while watching myself gradually draw closer to the themes of “maternal love” and “the fact that we are kept alive”—with the help of materials such as washi paper. Having experienced a terminal diagnosis Theme “Being Kept Alive” Driven by regret over not being able to help my childhood friends who passed away in their teens, I’ve spent the past 15 years sharing insights into the structure of internal reference frames and promoting the sanctity of life through “suicide prevention volunteer work” and as a mental health professional <Background> In October 2022, after recovering from a serious illness, I found an owl that had fallen at my front door and took it in temporarily; it felt like some kind of sign. After that, more people around me began painting, and with encouragement from those around me, I decided to start painting myself. I began painting in late October 2022. In February 2022, I first experimented with acrylic paints. In 2023, I donated two pieces in response to a request from a general hospital.
