Horses are creatures that feel anxious unless something leads the way. They feel at ease when a person takes the lead.
I don’t think anyone ever imagined that horses, too, would find it enjoyable and relaxing to have someone take the lead. Some people might look at this and think, “It’s sad that they’re being hit.” But from the horse’s perspective, it’s different.
I feel that people often say “it’s sad” precisely because they’re surprisingly unaware of their own joy.
